Insight Into What Myopia Is

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error where close objects can be seen clearly, but distant objects appear blurry. This occurs when the eyeball is too long, or the cornea (the front part of the eye) has too much curvature. As a result, light entering the eye focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Myopia is a common vision condition that often develops during childhood and tends to progress until the eyes stop growing. Treatment options include eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery, and effective myopia management strategies aim to slow its progression.

Recognizing Myopia Signs Across Ages

The signs and symptoms of myopia can vary between adults and children, but common indicators include:

In Adults:

  • Difficulty seeing clearly at a distance, particularly when driving or watching TV
  • Discomfort or fatigue in the eyes
  • Frequent headaches
  • The tendency to squint to see distant objects more clearly
  • A preference for sitting closer to screens or objects to see them more clearly

In Children:

  • Struggling to see the chalkboard in school
  • Frequent squinting
  • Excessive blinking or rubbing of the eyes
  • Holding books or devices very close to the face
  • Decline in academic performance
  • Complaining about headaches or eye strain
