Diabetes and Eye Health

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by elevated blood glucose or blood sugar levels. When the body either cannot produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) or cannot use insulin effectively, it accumulates excess glucose in the bloodstream.

The impact of diabetes on the eyes is significant and can lead to a condition known as diabetic retinopathy. Over time, diabetic retinopathy can cause vision changes and, if left untreated, may lead to severe vision impairment or blindness.

Eye Conditions Linked to Diabetes

Individuals with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing several eye conditions, including:

This is a common complication of diabetes and occurs when elevated blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision impairment.

Swelling in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision, can occur due to diabetic retinopathy.

People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing cataracts at an earlier age.
